PS2 Hidden Gems Worth Collecting

The PlayStation 2 has one of the biggest game libraries ever made, which means plenty of great games got lost in the crowd. These are the ones collectors keep hunting for, whether for their gameplay, their art or their rarity.

Okami

Capcom's painted-brush adventure is often called one of the most beautiful games of its generation. You play as the sun goddess Amaterasu and use a celestial brush to change the world around you.

Viewtiful Joe

A stylish, cel-shaded side-scrolling brawler from Capcom where you slow down and speed up time to take out enemies. Tough, flashy and still a blast.

Gitaroo Man

A wonderfully weird rhythm game about a kid who becomes a guitar-wielding hero. Its soundtrack and boss battles have earned it a devoted cult following.

Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil

A charming 2.5D platformer from Namco with clever level design and a surprisingly heartfelt story. One of the best platformers on the system that many players missed.

Shadow of Destiny

A time-traveling mystery from Konami where you have to prevent your own murder. Multiple endings make it great for replaying.

Soul Nomad & The World Eaters

A strategy RPG from Nippon Ichi with deep squad-building and the studio's trademark humor. Complete copies with inserts are a nice find for collectors.

Rule of Rose

A dark, unsettling survival horror game that saw a limited release. Its rarity has made it one of the most sought-after games in many PS2 collections.

Collecting tips for PS2

  • Complete in box beats loose. The case, manual and inserts like registration cards add value and make a collection look great on the shelf.
  • Check the disc. Light surface scratches are normal, but deep scratches can cause read errors. Ask for photos if a listing doesn't show the disc.
  • Black label vs. Greatest Hits. Original black-label releases are usually more collectible than the red-label Greatest Hits reprints.
